About Capital Gains ITR

A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.

Quick answer

Since 23 July 2024, short-term gains on listed shares and equity funds are taxed at 20% and long-term gains at 12.5% above a ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption. Long-term gains on property and other assets are taxed at 12.5% without indexation (residents selling land or buildings bought before that date can choose 20% with indexation). Crypto gains are taxed at 30% with no loss set-off.

Capital gains is where returns get complicated quickly: different holding periods, grandfathering for shares bought before February 2018, debt funds taxed at slab rates, property sales with the indexation choice, and exemptions under Sections 54, 54F and 54EC with strict timelines.

We compute gains from your broker, fund and property documents, apply the rates that apply to each sale date, use the exemptions you're eligible for and harvest losses where they help, then report everything in the schedules the department checks against AIS.

For sales that haven't happened yet, we can tell you the tax before you sell.
