About Tax Loss Harvesting
A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.
Tax-loss harvesting means selling investments at a loss before 31 March to offset gains made in the same year. Short-term losses offset both short- and long-term gains; long-term losses offset only long-term gains; unused losses carry forward for eight years if the return is filed on time. Many investors also sell and rebuy equity to use the ₹1.25 lakh long-term exemption each year.
We review your realised gains and unrealised positions in February and March, show which sales cut tax and by how much after costs, and make sure the losses are reported so they can be carried forward.
| Short-term loss | Offsets short- and long-term gains |
|---|---|
| Long-term loss | Offsets long-term gains only |
| Carry forward | 8 years, if the return is filed by the due date |
| Annual exemption | ₹1.25 lakh LTCG on listed equity |
| Crypto | Losses can't be set off |
