EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) — Meaning
The obligation on producers, importers and brand owners to fund collection and recycling of their packaging or products.
What is EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility)?
Under India's EPR rules — for plastic packaging, e-waste and batteries — producers, importers and brand owners must register on CPCB's portals, meet yearly collection and recycling targets by buying EPR certificates from registered processors or recyclers, and file returns. Non-compliance attracts environmental compensation and can lead to suspension of registration. Many e-commerce and D2C brands are brand owners under the plastic rules.
