About TDS Return Filing

A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.

TDS defaults are expensive and automatic: late-filing fees of ₹200 a day, interest at 1% to 1.5% a month on late deduction or payment, and short-deduction demands raised by the TRACES system when PANs are wrong or rates are misapplied.

We tell you which payments need TDS and at what rate — salaries, contractors, professionals, rent, commission, purchases above thresholds, partners' remuneration — prepare challans, file the quarterly statements and issue Form 16 and 16A.

Any default notice from TRACES is reviewed and corrected through a correction statement.

Quick answer

Anyone deducting TDS must pay it by the 7th of the next month (30 April for March) and file quarterly statements by 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May. From 1 April 2026 the statements have new numbers under the Income-tax Act, 2025 — Form 138 for salary, 140 for other residents and 144 for non-residents (formerly 24Q, 26Q and 27Q). Late filing costs ₹200 a day.

FAQs

Quick answers to common questions.

Search FAQs
6 results.
Have the TDS return forms changed?
Yes. From 1 April 2026, under the Income-tax Act, 2025, the quarterly statements are Form 138 (salary), Form 140 (payments to residents other than salary) and Form 144 (payments to non-residents). Statements for periods before April 2026 still use 24Q, 26Q and 27Q.
What if a deductee's PAN is wrong?
TDS on an invalid PAN creates a short-deduction demand at the higher rate. We validate PANs before filing and correct errors through a correction statement.
What is the late fee for a TDS return?
₹200 for every day of delay until the statement is filed, capped at the TDS amount. A separate penalty of ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh can also apply, but not if the statement is filed within a year of the due date with the fee and interest paid.
Do I need a TAN to deduct TDS?
Yes. Anyone required to deduct TDS needs a Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN), quoted on every challan and statement. Individuals deducting TDS on buying property from a resident seller, or on rent above ₹50,000 a month, use a PAN-based challan-cum-statement instead; buying property from an NRI needs a TAN.
When must Form 16 and Form 16A be issued?
Form 16 for salary is issued once a year, by 15 June after the financial year. Form 16A for other payments is issued every quarter, within 15 days of the quarterly statement's due date.
What if I deducted TDS but paid it late?
Interest of 1.5% a month applies from the date of deduction to the date of payment, and must be paid before the statement is filed. Deducting late carries 1% a month. Filing the statement on time still avoids the ₹200-a-day fee.
