About GST Cancellation
A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.
Cancellation doesn't end your GST obligations on the day you stop trading. The officer will expect every return up to the cancellation date, tax on closing stock to the extent of credit claimed, and the final return. Skipping GSTR-10 leads to a notice and an assessment order based on best judgement.
Officers also cancel registrations on their own (suo motu) — most often for six months of non-filing, but also when the business isn't found at the address. If that happens, the right response is quick: file the pending returns with late fees and interest, then apply for revocation within the time allowed.
We handle either direction: a clean voluntary closure, or restoring a GSTIN you still need.
A business that closes, is sold, changes constitution or falls below the threshold can apply to cancel its GSTIN in Form REG-16. All pending returns must be filed, credit on closing stock and capital goods reversed, and a final return GSTR-10 filed within three months of cancellation. If an officer cancelled your GSTIN for non-filing, you can apply for revocation in REG-21 within 90 days of the order.
| Voluntary cancellation | Form REG-16; order in REG-19 |
|---|---|
| Final return | GSTR-10 within 3 months of the cancellation date or order, whichever is later |
| Stock and capital goods | Credit reversed or tax paid on closing stock (Section 29(5)) |
| Suo motu cancellation | After REG-17 show cause; common trigger is 6 months of non-filing |
| Revocation | Form REG-21 within 90 days of the cancellation order (extendable by up to 180 days) |
