About GST Registration Revocation & Suspension
A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.
If the GST officer cancels your registration — commonly for not filing returns for a continuous period — you can apply for revocation in Form REG-21 within 90 days of the cancellation order, after filing all pending returns and paying dues; the period can be extended by the Commissioner. Before cancellation, a show-cause notice in REG-17 (or a suspension intimation in REG-31 for return discrepancies) gives you a chance to respond.
A cancelled GSTIN stops you from collecting GST and makes your customers lose ITC on your invoices, so speed matters. Pending returns with late fees and interest must be filed first; the revocation application then explains why the business is active and compliant.
Suspension under Rule 21A is an intermediate stage, often triggered automatically by return discrepancies. A clear reply with reconciliations can restore the registration without cancellation.
| Before cancellation | SCN in REG-17; suspension intimation REG-31 |
|---|---|
| Revocation | REG-21 within 90 days of the cancellation order (extendable) |
| Pre-condition | All pending returns filed, dues paid |
| Voluntary cancellation | Separate process — see GST cancellation |
