About GST Filing Nil

A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.

Quick answer

A registered business with no sales and no purchases in a period must still file nil GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Missing them costs ₹20 a day per return (capped at ₹500 per return), blocks e-way bills after two months, and six months of non-filing can lead the officer to cancel your GSTIN. Nil returns can be filed on the portal or by SMS.

Many new businesses get a GSTIN before sales begin, and seasonal or paused businesses have months with no activity. GST law still expects a return for every period, and the portal tracks non-filers automatically.

A nil return is only correct if there were truly no outward supplies, no purchases on which credit is claimed, and no reverse-charge liability in the period. A single purchase bill or a rent invoice under reverse charge means the return is not nil.

We confirm the period is genuinely nil, file both returns before the due date, and tell you the moment activity starts so the plan can move to regular filing.
