The deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar has passed (31st March 2023 with late fee, extended). If your PAN is still not linked to Aadhaar, it has become inoperative — meaning TDS will be deducted at higher rates and you cannot file your ITR. Here is how to check your status and fix it.
How to Check PAN-Aadhaar Link Status
- Visit incometax.gov.in
- Click on 'Link Aadhaar Status' under Quick Links (no login required)
- Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number
- Click 'View Link Aadhaar Status'
- Status will show: 'Your PAN is linked to Aadhaar' OR 'PAN is not linked — link now'
How to Link PAN with Aadhaar (With Late Fee)
- Pay the ₹1,000 late fee via Challan ITNS 280 — select 'Other Receipts (500)' under AY 2023-24
- Wait 4–5 days after payment for it to reflect in the system
- Visit incometax.gov.in → 'Link Aadhaar' under Quick Links
- Enter PAN and Aadhaar number → click 'Validate'
- Enter the OTP sent to Aadhaar-registered mobile number
- Linking typically activates within 30 days
Consequences of Inoperative PAN
- TDS deducted at 20% instead of normal rates (Section 206AA) on all income
- Cannot file Income Tax Return — returns are rejected if PAN is inoperative
- Refunds from ITR cannot be processed
- Cannot open bank accounts, invest in mutual funds, or buy insurance above ₹50,000
- Stock trading and demat account operations may be frozen
- Cannot apply for home loans or other credit above threshold amounts
Note: Once you link Aadhaar to PAN and pay the fee, your PAN becomes operative again within 30 days. Excess TDS already deducted at higher rates can be claimed as refund in your ITR.
