How to e-Verify Your ITR: 6 Methods and the 30-Day Rule (2026)
A return that is not verified within 30 days is treated as not filed. Here are all six ways to verify your ITR and what to do if you have missed the window.
Official portal: Income Tax e-Filing Portal
Indus Tax is a private CA firm, not affiliated with the Government of India. This guide explains the official process; we never ask for your portal password.
Why e-verification matters
Filing the ITR is only half the job. A return not verified within 30 days of uploading is treated as not filed. If you verify late, the verification date is treated as the filing date — which can make the return belated, attract a late fee under Section 234F and cost you the right to carry forward some losses.
Six ways to verify
Pick whichever method you have set up:
| Method | What you need |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar OTP | Aadhaar linked with PAN and a mobile number linked with Aadhaar |
| Net banking | Net banking at a bank that offers e-filing login |
| EVC through bank account | A pre-validated, EVC-enabled bank account on the portal |
| EVC through demat account | A pre-validated, EVC-enabled demat account |
| Digital Signature Certificate | A valid DSC registered on the portal (mandatory for some filers) |
| Physical ITR-V | The signed ITR-V posted to CPC Bengaluru within 30 days |
How to e-verify with Aadhaar OTP
The fastest method for most individuals:
- 1Log in at incometax.gov.in, or use Quick Links > e-Verify Return without logging in.
- 2Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > e-Verify ITR.
- 3Select the return for the assessment year and click e-Verify.
- 4Choose the option to verify using OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
- 5Tick the consent box, generate the OTP and enter it before it expires.
- 6Download the acknowledgement — it is also emailed to you.
Sending ITR-V by post
If you cannot e-verify, print the ITR-V, sign it, and send it by ordinary or speed post to: Centralized Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru — 560500. It must reach CPC within 30 days of filing. Courier is not accepted.
Missed the 30-day window?
You can still verify, but the return is treated as filed on the verification date. If there was a genuine reason for the delay, you can file a condonation request under Services > Condonation Request, explaining why; the department decides whether to accept it.
