About Tax Audit for Traders
A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.
A trader needs a tax audit under Section 44AB if trading turnover exceeds ₹10 crore (when cash transactions are within 5%, which is always the case for exchange trading) — or if they opted for presumptive taxation in any of the last five years, now declare lower profit, and total income exceeds the basic exemption limit. The audit report is due by 30 September (21 October 2026 for this year after the CBDT extension) and the ITR by 31 October (21 November 2026).
Many traders get audits they don't need, and some skip audits they do need. The answer depends on turnover computed per the ICAI Guidance Note and your presumptive-taxation history, so we check both before you pay for an audit.
Where an audit applies, it is carried out by a chartered accountant with Form 3CB/3CD, books of account and reconciliations with broker statements.
| Turnover limit | ₹10 crore (digital transactions) |
|---|---|
| Presumptive link | Section 44AD(4)/(5) consequences |
| Report | Form 3CB-3CD (renumbered under the 2025 Act from tax year 2026-27) |
| FY 2025-26 due dates | Audit report 21 Oct 2026; ITR 21 Nov 2026 |
| Penalty for no audit | 0.5% of turnover, up to ₹1.5 lakh |
