Udyam Registration Online: Free MSME Registration Step by Step (2026)
Udyam registration is free, paperless and done on one official site. Here is who qualifies under the revised 2025 limits, how to register step by step, and how to print or update the certificate.
Official portal: Udyam Registration Portal (Ministry of MSME)
Indus Tax is a private CA firm, not affiliated with the Government of India. This guide explains the official process; we never ask for your portal password.
Udyam registration is free
Registration on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, costs nothing. Many lookalike websites charge fees and collect Aadhaar details — avoid them. Registration is self-declared and paperless: investment and turnover figures are pulled from your ITR and GST records using your PAN.
MSME limits from 1 April 2025
An enterprise must meet both the investment and the turnover limit to fall in a category. Export turnover is excluded for classification.
| Category | Investment in plant, machinery or equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
What you need
Keep these ready before you start:
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory
- PAN of the enterprise, and GSTIN where GST registration is mandatory for you
- Bank account details
- NIC code describing your main business activity
- Number of employees, and investment and turnover figures (auto-filled where available)
Step-by-step Udyam registration
The whole process takes about 15 minutes:
- 1Open udyamregistration.gov.in and choose the option for new entrepreneurs not yet registered as MSME.
- 2Enter the entrepreneur's Aadhaar number and name and validate with OTP.
- 3Select the organisation type, enter the PAN and validate it — details are fetched from income tax records.
- 4Fill in the enterprise name, address, plant locations, bank details, NIC activity codes and employee count.
- 5Confirm the investment and turnover figures and the declaration.
- 6Submit with the final OTP. The Udyam Registration Number (format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000) and e-certificate are issued.
Print, verify or update the certificate
The certificate never expires, but the details must stay current:
- Print the certificate from the portal's Print / Verify menu, using your Udyam number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile
- Update details after any change in activity, address, ownership or financials
- Informal micro enterprises without a PAN can register through the Udyam Assist Platform via designated agencies
Why MSME registration pays off
Registration unlocks real commercial advantages:
- Priority sector lending and collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE scheme
- Protection against delayed payments: buyers must pay within the agreed period (no more than 45 days), and disputes can go to the MSME Samadhaan portal
- Buyers who pay micro and small enterprises late cannot deduct that expense until it is paid (Section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act, 1961), so customers take registered vendors' invoices seriously
- Concessions in government tenders and some fee waivers
