Check Income Tax Notices Online and Reply on e-Proceedings (2026)

Every income tax notice lands on the e-filing portal. Here is where to find it, how to confirm it is genuine, and how to submit your reply before the deadline.

Official portal: Income Tax e-Filing Portal

Indus Tax is a private CA firm, not affiliated with the Government of India. This guide explains the official process; we never ask for your portal password.

Where notices appear on the portal

Check these places regularly, not only when you get an SMS:

  • Pending Actions > e-Proceedings — notices and letters in proceedings, with response due dates
  • Pending Actions > Worklist — items that need your action
  • Pending Actions > Response to Outstanding Demand — demands raised against your PAN
  • Your registered email and mobile — every notice is also sent there, so keep them current

How to check and reply to a notice

Most notices are answered entirely online:

  1. 1Log in at incometax.gov.in.
  2. 2Go to Pending Actions > e-Proceedings.
  3. 3Open the proceeding, click View Notices and download the notice. Note the response due date.
  4. 4Click Submit Response, choose a full or partial response, and upload your reply and supporting documents as PDFs.
  5. 5Submit and download the acknowledgement. If you need more time, use the adjournment option where available and give reasons.

Is the notice genuine?

Every notice from the department carries a Document Identification Number (DIN). Use Quick Links > Authenticate notice/order issued by ITD on the e-filing portal and enter the DIN, or your PAN with the notice type, assessment year and date. If the portal cannot find it, do not pay or share information — report it.

Common notices and what they mean

Notices for proceedings under the Income-tax Act, 2025 cite new section numbers, while matters for older years may still cite the Income-tax Act, 1961. The portal process is the same.

Do not ignore a notice

Missing a deadline can lead to a best-judgement assessment, penalties or a confirmed demand. For scrutiny, reassessment, high-value transactions or foreign assets, have a CA prepare the response. Our notice reply guide explains how to draft one.
