E-Way Bill Login and Generation: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
Moving goods worth more than ₹50,000 needs an e-way bill. This guide covers registering on the e-way bill portal, generating the bill, validity, extensions and the rules that trip businesses up.
Official portal: E-Way Bill System
Indus Tax is a private CA firm, not affiliated with the Government of India. This guide explains the official process; we never ask for your portal password.
When an e-way bill is required
An e-way bill is needed to move goods whose consignment value exceeds ₹50,000 — for a sale, a stock transfer between branches or a job-work movement. Some states set different limits for movement within the state, and certain goods are exempt. The supplier, the recipient or the transporter can generate it. E-way bills apply only to goods, never to services.
How to register and log in
GST-registered businesses register once using their GSTIN:
- 1Open ewaybillgst.gov.in and click e-Way Bill Registration (or Enrolment for Transporters if you are an unregistered transporter).
- 2Enter your GSTIN and the captcha — your details are fetched from the GST system.
- 3Verify with the OTP sent to your GST-registered mobile.
- 4Create a username and password.
- 5Log in with the username, password and OTP-based two-factor authentication.
How to generate an e-way bill
Keep the invoice and vehicle details ready:
- 1After login, go to e-Waybill > Generate New.
- 2Select the transaction type (Outward or Inward), sub-type (Supply, Job Work and so on) and document type.
- 3Enter the invoice or delivery challan number and date.
- 4Enter consignor and consignee details — GSTINs auto-fill names and addresses.
- 5Add item details: product name, HSN code, quantity, taxable value and tax rates.
- 6Fill Part B: transport mode and vehicle number, or the transporter ID if the transporter will update the vehicle later.
- 7Submit. A 12-digit e-way bill number is generated — print it or share the PDF with the driver.
E-way bill validity
A day ends at midnight following the time of generation. If goods are still in transit, you can extend validity from 8 hours before to 8 hours after expiry.
| Type of cargo | Validity |
|---|---|
| Normal cargo | 1 day for every 200 km or part of it |
| Over-dimensional cargo | 1 day for every 20 km or part of it |
Rules that trip businesses up
These restrictions cause most last-minute problems:
- Cancellation is allowed only within 24 hours of generation, and only if the e-way bill has not been verified in transit
- An e-way bill cannot be generated for documents older than 180 days
- Validity cannot be extended beyond 360 days from generation
- If you are covered by e-invoicing, generate the e-way bill from the IRN so details flow automatically
- Generation is blocked if GSTR-3B (or CMP-08 for composition dealers) is unfiled for two consecutive periods
Penalty for moving goods without an e-way bill
Goods and the vehicle can be detained under Section 129 of the CGST Act, and release requires paying a penalty — 200% of the tax payable where the owner comes forward. A general penalty under Section 122 can also apply.
