About GST Registration

A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.

GST registration gives your business a 15-digit GSTIN. With it you can charge GST on invoices, claim input tax credit on purchases and sell across state borders. The threshold is based on aggregate turnover across India under one PAN — taxable, exempt and export sales together — so a business with several branches counts them all.

Most rejections and delays come from small mismatches: the address proof doesn't match the premises entered, the rent agreement isn't backed by an owner's consent letter, the business activity codes are wrong, or Aadhaar authentication was skipped. Since 1 November 2025, applicants whose monthly output tax will be up to ₹2.5 lakh can also opt for the simplified route under Rule 14A, which gives registration within three working days after Aadhaar authentication.

We check whether you need to register (or whether the composition scheme suits you better), prepare the application with the right HSN/SAC codes and premises documents, complete Aadhaar or DSC authentication with you, reply to any officer query in Form REG-03, and hand over the certificate with a first-month compliance checklist.

Quick answer

You must register for GST once your aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (lower in some states) or ₹20 lakh for services, or from day one if you sell goods inter-state, sell through most e-commerce marketplaces or pay tax under reverse charge. The application is Form GST REG-01 on the GST portal; there is no government fee, and a GSTIN is usually issued within 3 to 7 working days.

FAQs

Quick answers to common questions.

Search FAQs

Is GST registration free?
Yes. The government charges no fee for GST registration. Our fee covers checking eligibility, preparing the application, authentication support and replying to officer queries until the GSTIN is issued.
How long does GST registration take?
Usually 3 to 7 working days. Applicants who opt for the simplified Rule 14A route (monthly output tax up to ₹2.5 lakh) and complete Aadhaar authentication can get registration within three working days. If the officer orders physical verification of the premises, it can take up to 30 days.
Can I register for GST from my home address?
Yes. A residential address can be the principal place of business. You need an electricity bill or property tax receipt, and if the house is rented or owned by a family member, a rent agreement or a consent letter from the owner.
Do I need GST registration below ₹20 lakh turnover?
Only in some cases: selling goods inter-state, selling goods through most e-commerce marketplaces, paying tax under reverse charge, or acting as a casual or non-resident taxable person. Many businesses below the threshold also register voluntarily because their B2B customers want GST invoices to claim credit.
What is the composition scheme and should I choose it?
Composition lets small businesses pay tax at a low fixed rate on turnover and file simpler returns, but you can't charge GST on invoices, claim input tax credit or sell goods inter-state. It is open to goods traders and manufacturers up to ₹1.5 crore turnover and some service providers up to ₹50 lakh. It suits businesses selling to consumers, not to other businesses.
What happens after I get my GSTIN?
Returns start from the month of registration — GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B even if there are no sales. You must display the GSTIN at your premises and on invoices. We give you a filing calendar, and our GST return filing plans can take over from the first month.
Do doctors, clinics, trusts and NGOs need GST registration?
Not if they supply only exempt services. Healthcare by clinical establishments and authorised medical practitioners, and charitable activities of trusts registered under Section 12AB, are exempt, and a person supplying only exempt services needn't register. Registration is needed once taxable supplies — a pharmacy counter, cosmetic procedures, renting out space, sponsorship or sale of goods — take aggregate turnover (which includes the exempt receipts) past the threshold.
Do restaurants and cloud kitchens need GST registration?
Yes, once turnover crosses the threshold. Most standalone restaurants charge 5% GST without input tax credit. For orders through Swiggy, Zomato and similar apps, the platform charges and pays that 5% under Section 9(5) instead of the kitchen, but dine-in, takeaway, catering and your own website sales are still yours to report.
Do contractors, construction firms, transporters and manpower agencies need GST registration?
They register once their turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states), like other service providers. Some of their services fall under reverse charge, where the business customer pays the GST — for example goods transport by a GTA that hasn't opted for forward charge, or security services from a firm to a registered business — which affects how invoices are raised. Professional services such as architecture, interior design and real-estate brokerage are generally taxed at 18%, while works-contract rates for construction depend on the type of project. We check this before registration.
Do traders, wholesalers, distributors and retailers need GST registration?
Yes, once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh or ₹10 lakh in some states), or from day one if they sell goods inter-state. Traders selling mainly to consumers can consider the composition scheme up to ₹1.5 crore; distributors supplying businesses usually stay in the regular scheme so customers can claim credit.
