About GST Filing

A clear overview, in simple terms — what it is, why it matters, and how we handle it.

GST return filing is no longer a monthly upload. The portal now carries GSTR-1's figures into GSTR-3B and locks them, input tax credit is allowed only if it appears in your GSTR-2B, and the Invoice Management System (IMS) lets you accept, reject or hold supplier invoices before GSTR-2B is generated. Returns not filed within three years of their due date can't be filed at all.

So the work that matters happens before filing: checking every sales invoice and credit note, matching purchase invoices to IMS and GSTR-2B, following up suppliers who haven't uploaded, and computing the right amount to pay in cash after using credit.

We do that every period, file both returns, share the challan before the due date and send you a one-page summary of tax paid, credit used and anything pending with suppliers.

Quick answer

Every regular GST registrant files GSTR-1 (sales) and GSTR-3B (summary and tax payment) for each period — monthly by the 11th and 20th, or quarterly under QRMP for turnover up to ₹5 crore. Late filing costs ₹50 a day (₹20 for nil returns) plus 18% interest on unpaid tax, and from July 2025 the sales figures in GSTR-3B are locked to GSTR-1, so errors must be fixed before filing.

FAQs

Quick answers to common questions.

What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
GSTR-1 reports every outward supply invoice so your customers can see them in their GSTR-2B. GSTR-3B is the summary return in which you declare total tax, claim input tax credit and pay the balance. Both are required each period.
Should I file monthly or quarterly?
If your turnover is up to ₹5 crore you can choose the QRMP scheme: quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, with tax paid monthly through PMT-06. It cuts filings, but B2B customers who want credit every month may prefer that you upload invoices monthly through IFF. We help you choose.
What if I missed a GST return?
File it as soon as possible: late fee runs per day and interest at 18% a year on unpaid tax. You also can't file GSTR-1 for the next period until the previous GSTR-3B is filed, and six months of non-filing can lead to cancellation. Returns more than three years past due can no longer be filed.
Can I correct a mistake in GSTR-3B after filing?
Not in the same return. Since July 2025 the outward supply figures in GSTR-3B come from GSTR-1 and can't be edited, so corrections are made through GSTR-1A before GSTR-3B is filed, or in the next period's returns. That's why we review before filing.
Why is my input tax credit lower than my purchase bills?
Credit is allowed only for invoices your suppliers have reported, which then appear in your GSTR-2B. If a supplier files late or uploads a wrong GSTIN, the credit doesn't show. We list those suppliers every month so you can follow up before the credit is lost.
Can you file pending GST returns for several past months (backlog)?
Yes. Backlog returns are filed oldest first, because each period's GSTR-1 needs the previous GSTR-3B. Late fees are capped per return and interest runs at 18% a year on unpaid tax, so we compute the total cost before filing. Returns more than three years past their due date can no longer be filed, so older gaps need a different fix.
Do you file GST returns for businesses with multiple GSTINs?
Yes. Each GSTIN — one per state — files its own GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and annual return. We run all of them on one calendar, reconcile inter-branch invoices between your own GSTINs, and give you one consolidated status report.
Are GST returns different for proprietorships, LLPs and private limited companies?
No. The returns depend on your scheme and turnover, not the type of entity: a proprietorship, LLP and private limited company in the regular scheme all file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. What differs is around the returns — companies and LLPs also have ROC filings, and their accounts must match what's reported for GST.
How do I file a nil GST return?
If there were no sales, purchases or tax due in the period, you still file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B as nil returns — on the portal or by SMS from the registered mobile number. Skipping them attracts a late fee of ₹20 a day for a nil GSTR-3B (capped at ₹500) and can lead to cancellation after six months of non-filing.
What is the late fee for filing GST returns late?
For GSTR-3B the late fee is ₹50 a day (₹20 for nil returns), capped per return at ₹2,000 for turnover up to ₹1.5 crore, ₹5,000 up to ₹5 crore and ₹10,000 above that (₹500 for nil returns), with similar caps for GSTR-1. Interest at 18% a year also runs on tax paid late. We compute both before filing pending returns.
