# DRC-03 Voluntary Payment & DRC-03A Linking

> Form DRC-03 is used to pay GST voluntarily — for example tax short-paid in earlier returns, ITC reversals found on reconciliation, or amounts you accept in response to a notice or audit. Paying before a notice reduces penalty exposure. If a demand order is later issued for the same amount, Form DRC-03A links the earlier DRC-03 payment to the demand so the portal doesn't show it as unpaid.

Practice: Tax Notices & Litigation — https://www.industax.com/services/tax-litigation/

DRC-03 payments must carry the correct cause (voluntary, SCN, audit, others) and the period, and interest should be paid along with the tax. Payments made with the wrong cause are a common reason demands still appear outstanding.

GSTN introduced DRC-03A because DRC-03 payments were not automatically adjusted against demand orders. Linking is done by the taxpayer on the portal against the specific demand ID.

## FAQs

### Can DRC-03 be paid from the credit ledger?

Tax can generally be paid using ITC where the law allows; interest and penalty are paid in cash.

### Why does my demand still show after paying DRC-03?

DRC-03 payments aren't automatically adjusted against demand orders; file DRC-03A to link them.

### Does paying through DRC-03 reduce penalty?

Yes. Paying tax with interest before a show-cause notice generally avoids penalty in non-fraud cases and substantially reduces it in fraud cases; paying within the time allowed after the notice also lowers the penalty.
