# NRI Repatriation of Funds & Sale Proceeds

> NRIs and OCIs can repatriate up to USD 1 million per financial year from NRO balances — including property sale proceeds and inheritances — after paying Indian tax, with a CA certificate and declaration (Forms 15CB and 15CA, renumbered Forms 146 and 145 from 1 April 2026). NRE and FCNR balances are freely repatriable. Property bought with foreign exchange can have its sale proceeds repatriated up to the amount originally brought in, for up to two residential properties.

Banks need to see that tax has been paid on what you're sending: our CA certificate covers the source of funds, tax deducted or paid, and DTAA position. Getting the property-sale TDS right (often via a lower-deduction certificate) avoids having excess tax trapped in India.

For inherited money, keep the will or succession documents, the death certificate and proof of tax paid. Larger or unusual cases — beyond USD 1 million, or funds of unclear origin — may need RBI approval through the bank.
