# Relief on Salary Arrears — Section 89 & Form 10E

> When you receive salary arrears or advance salary, the extra income can push you into a higher slab. Section 89 relief recomputes tax as if the arrears had been received in the years they relate to and gives you the difference. You must file Form 10E online before claiming the relief in your ITR — without it, the processing centre disallows the relief and raises a demand.

Relief is computed by comparing tax with and without the arrears in both the current year and the earlier years they belong to. It helps most when the earlier years had lower income or a lower-tax regime.

We compute the relief year by year, file Form 10E, and respond to notices where relief was disallowed because the form was missing.

## FAQs

### Is Form 10E mandatory?

Yes. The relief is allowed only if Form 10E is filed online; the employer's computation alone isn't enough.

### Can relief be claimed after filing the ITR?

You can file Form 10E and then revise the return within the time allowed, or respond to the notice with the form filed.

### Does relief apply if the earlier year was taxed under a different regime?

The recomputation uses the rates applicable in each earlier year, so regime and slab differences are reflected in the relief.
