# India Tax Desk for NRIs in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait & Oman

> Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait don't levy personal income tax on salaries, and Oman has announced a personal income tax only for high earners from 2028. NRIs there pay Indian tax only on Indian income while non-resident. Because they aren't taxed abroad, Indian citizens with Indian income above ₹15 lakh can be deemed resident (as RNOR), and the 120-day visit test applies — so day counts and Indian income levels need tracking.

Gulf NRIs often have significant Indian income from rent and deposits, which brings the ₹15 lakh threshold into play. RNOR status still keeps Gulf salary out of Indian tax, but changes some reporting.

We determine status each year, file the Indian return, and plan the return to India — including the RNOR window for foreign income.

## FAQs

### Is my Saudi or Qatar salary taxable in India?

No, while you are non-resident or RNOR and the salary is earned and received abroad.

### What is RNOR and how does it help returning Gulf NRIs?

Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident status usually lasts two to three years after return; during it, foreign income isn't taxed in India, giving time to wind up foreign assets.

### Can I keep NRE accounts after returning?

No. On becoming resident under FEMA, NRE accounts must be redesignated as resident or RFC accounts.
