# LEI Code Registration & Renewal

> A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character global code that identifies a legal entity in financial transactions. The RBI requires non-individual borrowers with aggregate bank exposure of ₹5 crore and above to have one, as well as entities making RTGS or NEFT payments of ₹50 crore and above and cross-border capital or current account transactions of ₹50 crore and above. In India it is issued by Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd (LEIL) and must be renewed every year.

Practice: Business Licences & Registrations — https://www.industax.com/services/business-licences/

Banks block renewal or enhancement of credit facilities when an LEI has lapsed, so annual renewal matters as much as the first registration. The LEI record also includes parent-entity information, which must be kept accurate.

We file the application with LEIL, provide the entity and ownership details, and track renewals.

### Do individuals need an LEI?

The RBI's LEI requirements apply to non-individual entities. Individuals are not required to obtain an LEI for these transactions.

### What happens if my LEI lapses?

Banks can decline to renew or enhance your credit facilities and may hold large-value transactions until the LEI is renewed.

### Can I get an LEI from a foreign issuer?

LEIs are global and any GLEIF-accredited issuer can issue one, but Indian regulators recognise LEIL, which is accredited by GLEIF, and most Indian entities use it.
