# Legal Metrology Registration (LMPC)

> Manufacturers, packers and importers of pre-packaged commodities must register with the Director or Controller of Legal Metrology under Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and every package must carry the mandatory declarations — including name and address, net quantity, month and year of manufacture, MRP and consumer-care details. Importers of weights and measures need a separate importer registration under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

Marketplaces and modern retail check LMPC registration and labels before listing products; non-compliant labels are the most common reason for penalties and seizures by legal metrology inspectors.

We register you with the right authority (state Controller or the central Director depending on the case), review label artwork against the declarations required, and handle importer registration for weighing and measuring instruments.

## FAQs

### Is LMPC registration needed for every product?

Registration is for the manufacturer, packer or importer, covering the commodities it packs or imports; it isn't per product. But each product's label must carry the mandatory declarations.

### Do e-commerce listings need legal metrology declarations?

Yes. The rules require e-commerce entities to display the mandatory declarations on the product listing, and marketplaces pass that obligation to sellers.

### What is the penalty for wrong labels?

Fines under the Legal Metrology Act, which increase for repeat offences, and possible seizure of non-compliant packages. Many first offences are compounded by paying a fee.
