# Rent Receipt Generator

> Employers ask for rent receipts before allowing HRA exemption in TDS, and the tax department can ask for them during scrutiny. A valid receipt names the tenant and landlord, the rented property, the period, the amount and payment mode, and is signed by the landlord. ## FAQs

### Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

A one-rupee revenue stamp is customary on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000 under state stamp laws. It isn't needed when rent is paid by bank transfer.

### What if my landlord has no PAN?

If annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, you need the landlord's PAN or a declaration from the landlord that they don't have one, with their name and address.

### Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?

Yes, if you actually pay it, they own the house, and they report the rent as income. Rent to a spouse is generally not accepted.
