# GSTIN Validator

> A GSTIN is a 15-character number: a 2-digit state code, the holder's 10-character PAN, an entity number for multiple registrations in the same state, the letter 'Z' by default, and a check character computed from the other 14. This tool validates all of these offline. A well-formed GSTIN can still be cancelled or suspended, so confirm the taxpayer's status on the GST portal before claiming input tax credit.

## Why validate a supplier's GSTIN

- Input tax credit is allowed only on invoices with a valid, active supplier GSTIN
- Fake or mistyped GSTINs on invoices lead to credit reversal with interest
- A cancelled supplier's invoices won't appear in GSTR-2B
- E-invoices and e-way bills reject invalid GSTINs

## Common state codes

| Code | State / UT |
| --- | --- |
| 07 | Delhi |
| 09 | Uttar Pradesh |
| 24 | Gujarat |
| 27 | Maharashtra |
| 29 | Karnataka |
| 33 | Tamil Nadu |

## FAQs

### Does a valid checksum mean the GSTIN is active?

No. The checksum only proves the number is well-formed. Use 'Search Taxpayer' on the GST portal to see whether it is active, cancelled or suspended, and the legal name.

### Why do some businesses have several GSTINs with the same PAN?

A GSTIN is state-specific, and a business can also take separate registrations for business verticals in the same state; the 13th character distinguishes them.

### Can I claim ITC if the supplier's GSTIN was cancelled later?

Credit is generally allowed for invoices issued while the registration was valid and reported in GSTR-1, but cancellations with retrospective effect can lead to credit being questioned.
